How to Stay Warm in Your Car Overnight: A Complete Guide

Whether you’re facing unexpected circumstances or have planned to sleep in your car, it’s essential to know how to stay warm overnight. This guide will provide practical tips to keep you cozy, no matter where you find yourself.

1. Use Your Car Heater (But Not While You Sleep!)

The first thought when trying to stay warm in your car overnight might be to turn on the heater, and that’s a great idea! However, do NOT leave it on overnight. Running the heater for extended periods while you sleep could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which is extremely dangerous.

If you’re determined to keep the heater on, ensure your car’s tailpipe is completely clear of obstructions to prevent the buildup of dangerous gases inside. If your car doesn’t have heating, don’t worry—check out my article “How to Stay Warm in a Car Without Heat” for more advice.

2. Insulate Your Car for Better Heat Retention

Your car wasn’t designed to be a cozy sleeping space, but insulation can work wonders. After using the heater to warm up the car, insulation will help keep that warmth inside. Plus, it’ll block out sunlight in the morning, allowing you to sleep in longer.

Here’s a simple DIY solution: Measure each window and cut insulation foam to fit. If you want to get creative, cover it with fabric or even paint it black for added effectiveness. Stick it to your windows with duct tape to complete the setup. This will trap heat while also providing some privacy.

3. Choose Your Parking Spot Wisely

Where you park can make a big difference in how warm you’ll feel. Parking in the open exposes you to the elements—wind, rain, or snow will all affect how cold you feel. Look for sheltered areas that offer protection from the wind and weather. Consider getting an automobile cover to shield your car from snow and frost.

4. Layer Up and Bundle Tight

Once your car is insulated, you need to focus on layering up in the warmest clothes you can find. If you’re camping in winter, don’t hesitate to put on multiple layers, including wool socks, thermal underwear, and a warm jacket. Fresh clothes are crucial—if you’re wet or sweaty, change into dry clothes before you sleep.

Wool and thermals are your best friends here. Wool keeps you warm even if it gets damp, so make sure you pack woolen socks, gloves, scarves, and even a balaclava or beanie. Long johns are perfect for layering without feeling bulky. Additionally, hand and foot warmers can be lifesavers—they activate when you open them and provide extra heat right where you need it.

5. Make Your Bed Cozy

Don’t overlook the importance of cozy bedding. A sleeping bag that covers your head is a great option, as it helps retain body heat. You can also add space blankets designed to trap heat or throw in some extra wool blankets. And don’t just sleep directly on the car seats—use a camping mattress for added comfort and support.

6. Eat and Drink Warm Things

Before heading to bed, prepare a hot meal to warm yourself up from the inside. A portable food heater can help you enjoy a comforting dish before you settle in for the night. Make sure to have some warm drinks on hand, too. Bring a thermos with hot water or tea, so if you wake up feeling cold, you’ll have something to sip that’ll make you feel instantly warmer.

7. Hydrate and Stay Energized

Even though you’re focused on warmth, don’t forget hydration. Having water nearby will help you stay energized and comfortable through the night. If you’ve used a stove to cook, keep some hot water in a thermos, so you don’t have to get out of bed to warm up in the middle of the night.
